For eight organic farmers in California’s Central Coast area, selling to restaurants and grocery stores is remarkably uncomplicated. They don’t have to fax price lists, chase down chefs and produce managers by phone, run deliveries all over town, or wait to be paid. Instead, they post availability and price lists on the internet, wait for email orders, fill the orders, and then wait for the refrigerated delivery truck that will pick up the food at the farm and deliver it. Payment is automatically deposited in their bank accounts.
