City folks often move to the country in search of a peaceful lifestyle, then start complaining about farming activities that don’t fit in with their notions of country life. The Ottawa County planning commission in Michigan was getting a lot of complaints from new residents about the noises and smells of farming. So the county has started giving out brochures to potential new residents with scratch ‘n’ sniff stickers that smell like manure. Mark Knudsen, director of the county’s planning and grants department said, “The whole purpose is that people should not move into a rural area unless they’re willing to accept and embrace the practices that happen on a farming operation.” (Holland, Michigan, Sentinel Sept. 17, 2003)
