The seed catalogues have been piling up on my desk for the past month or two, and I finally found a few days to spend with them. I was struck by the sheer abundance of vegetable and flower seed. Several new seed companies have appeared on the scene, and a few of the small seed companies that had simple, unillustrated catalogs in the past have put out full-color, glossy catalogs recently. The offerings from the established companies seem to be greater than ever. And, of course, there are hundreds of varieties labeled “new” in this stack of catalogs.
