While IFOAM tries to start Participatory Guarantee Systems around the world, as described in the previous article, the first such effort in the U.S. is growing rapidly, and several others are getting started.
Certified Naturally Grown is now in its fourth year of providing an alternative to organic certification. More than 300 farmers have enrolled in the program, which is available only to small-scale farmers who sell locally and directly to the public.
